History

Moldova was part of the Soviet Union until 1991. Since then, Moldova has struggled to find her place in Europe and has dealt with corruption in the government. Moldova again voted in a communist leader from 2001-2009. Moldova has suffered from political uncertainty for the past few years, with numerous elections and no president. In March 2012, a president was finally elected.

The People

There are about 4.5 million Moldovans in the world. Many of them speak Moldovan (A Romanian dialect) as their first language. Others speak Russian. Moldovans are hard-working, hospitable and eager to meet people from around the world.

The Church

Protestants make up about 1-2% of Moldova’s population. The church desires to grow and plant more churches in villages that have none. But Christian leaders are crying for more workers in the harvest field, more training and more resources.

The Need

Moldova is still considered the poorest country in Europe. Many people must choose whether to feed their families or heat their home for the winter. Most young people are leaving the country because they feel there is no hope for a future in Moldova. Moldova struggles with corruption, human trafficking, poverty, and many orphans. Moldova desperately needs the hope of the gospel.
